Hometown Snapshots
by Darren Anderson
I
Scattered fireweed
reach their red petals
up to a dandelion sun
lightly concealing
a coconut skin trail
that twists through long grass
like a gliding garner snake
towards the abandoned railway.
II
Fractured cedar panels,
and rusted nails.
Window frames with cobweb panes
look to Lake Superior.
Yet, with a young ear
rested on cold tracks, you
can hear a steam engine
that has not returned in 50 years.
III
Amethyst speckled sand ahead
naked footsteps behind
fill with rising tides where
voyageurs paddled their wares
occasionally stopping
to lite a birch bark fire
and warm their mocassin feet
on Terrace Bay shores.
