the lights have faded
and all is quiet
no humming of the AC
within minutes the temperature inside
begins to rise -
we are left powerless
tempers flare
with no TV distractions
boredom sets in quick
play outside
is one suggestion -
but the sun's intense heat
makes it hard to breath
so inside we stay
time seems to drag by -
no clocks to tick away the minutes
the ice cream melts in the freezer
it's too hot in the house;
food is sure to spoil before long
supper is only peanut butter on whole wheat
daylight grows weak
as the sun slips carefree below the horizon,
leaving us blanketed in darkness
bedtime comes early
dreams are of air-conditioning, light and frozen ice cream
morning promises to be better -
at least the sun's power
will return us
to light
